Hospitalisation
Before being admitted to a bed at Olomouc University Hospital, please go to the outpatient ward of the relevant clinic or department. The outpatient ward will carry out administrative tasks related to your admission to the hospital. You must arrive at the time advised by your doctor.
- ID card
- Health insurance card
- Referral for hospitalisation from your treating physician
- Results of any relevant examinations
- Results of any necessary preoperative examinations if you are to undergo an operation
- Certificate of incapacity to work (if issued before your admission)
- Toiletries and personal articles
- Slippers
- Pyjamas or a night-dress *
- Dressing gown
(* We will be happy to lend you pyjamas or a nightdress in the hospital; of course, you can use you own nightwear during your hospital stay if you wish. However, you must ensure that your nightwear is changed on a regular basis.)
NOTE - Patients hospitalised in the Clinic of Nuclear Medicine may not use their own personal items (pyjamas, towels, dressing gowns, handkerchiefs, etc.) for radiation-hygienic reasons. You will be given hospital nightwear after being assigned a bed.
We do not recommend that you bring large amounts of money, any valuables or weapons etc. when being admitted to the hospital. However, if you have valuables (jewellery, large sums of money or important documents), we recommend that you request they be stored in the Olomouc University Hospital safe.
Upon admission, the treating physician will examine you and provide you with all important information regarding your health condition. He/she will inform you of the planned examinations, possibilities of surgical interventions, as well as of possible complications. During your hospital stay, the physician will update you on your health condition and further course of treatment on a regular basis. Do not hesitate to ask about anything you do not understand or are worried about. The treating physician will be happy to explain anything you do not understand.
It is also important that you inform the physician of all your health problems in order to ensure the proper course of treatment. Try to provide the health professionals with all necessary information as it will help to facilitate and accelerate your treatment.
The assignment of a bed is also associated with the initial stages of your admission, including your signature of consent concerning admission to the hospital. It is an important legal form which covers health professionals against accusations of unauthorised handling of patients. In the case of children, the consent of admission to the hospital is signed by their legal representatives. Unconscious or legally incapacitated patients are hospitalised in compliance with applicable legal regulations.
We will ask you to sign the "Patient Instruction and Consent to Operation, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures and Anaesthesia" in connection with some therapeutic procedures. It is an expression of your consent that you will voluntarily undergo a certain medical examination or intervention. However, you will be entitled to refuse such an intervention despite your signature, and, at the same time, you will be informed of the consequences of your decision.
All health professionals are bound by confidentiality obligations. This means they must not (besides exceptions provided in legal regulations) talk about your illness nor any other undesired circumstances which they find out about during the performance of their work in the hospital unless they obtain your consent. You will decide who your treating physician may inform concerning your health condition. If you wish that none of your relatives are informed, we will respect your wishes. You will confirm the decision in writing using the Patient Instruction and Consent Form.
After you arrive at an inpatient department, a nurse will take care of you. With the assistance of a medical orderly and an auxiliary nurse, she will assign you a bed. Individual items of clothing will be recorded on the cloakroom slip and stored in a cabinet in the room or in the hospital cloakroom (depending on the room's furnishings). A bedside table or a cabinet will be available in the room to store your personal items.
NOTE: Do not leave valuables unattended in your room.
In some wards or departments you can have your own TV, radio or music player during your hospital stay. Please be considerate to other patients and do not annoy them by having your entertainment too loud.
Your treating physician will choose the most appropriate diet and it will be provided to you by Olomouc University Hospital’s catering service. If you were on a special diet at home (e.g. diabetic or gallbladder protective diet etc.), it is very important to inform your physician. The same diet will be prepared for you in the hospital.
If you are not prescribed any diet, you have the opportunity to choose lunch on weekdays for the next day from the three offered menus - more here.
NOTE: Please comply with the prescribed therapeutic diet. It is part of your treatment.
